A BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) overlay typically lasts three to four weeks before it needs an infill, and many clients keep the same set going for months with regular appointments. Longevity depends on nail growth, prep and how hard you use your hands.

The realistic answer: three to four weeks per infill

BIAB is a soak-off builder gel applied over your natural nail as a strengthening overlay. The product itself does not chip away quickly — what moves is your nail. As the nail plate grows, the apex of the overlay shifts off centre, so the set needs rebalancing rather than replacing.

Most clients book an infill every three to four weeks. If your nails grow fast or you work with your hands a lot, you may prefer every two and a half to three weeks.

Why some sets last longer than others

Preparation is the biggest factor. A properly dehydrated, dust-free nail with the correct amount of product placed at the stress point holds far better than a thick, rushed application.

Nail growth rate — faster growth means earlier rebalancing
Hand use — cleaning, gym, hairdressing and hospitality shorten wear
Length and shape — longer extensions put more leverage on the free edge
Aftercare — cuticle oil daily, gloves for washing up

BIAB vs Shellac vs acrylic

Shellac is a gel polish: colour and shine for roughly two to three weeks, with no added strength. BIAB adds structure, so it suits nails that peel or break. Acrylic is stronger again but is filed off rather than soaked off, and it is harsher on the natural nail.

If you want length and durability without the damage of acrylics, BIAB is usually the middle ground we recommend.
